Take Me to Tacoma . . . For Wintergrass, That Is!

New York, February 19, 2009. . . Fiddle thaw almost upon us!  Some great fiddle events in January - the Colorado fiddle contest and Portland Old-time Music Gathering leap to mind.

The Montana fiddle contest and Ajo and other Arizona fiddle events rocked the wintertime blues big-time.

Tacoma's own Wintergrass kicks off today, while Tucson hosts its Old Time Fiddlers Contest this coming Sunday (thanks for the heads-up Arizona!)

Not to mention Washington's brand new Olympia Old-Time Music Fest coming up next week (thanks, too, for letting us know about it!)!

New York, February 16, 2008 . . . We were in the Main Reading Room at the New York Public Library, back in December, working on the documentary film about fiddle music and Weiser.

The Main Reading Room has to be one of my favorite places in the city, really in the entire country.  What an inspirational space!  Click the link to see a small pic.)

Displayed nearby, a pristine edition of the Gutenberg Bible.  You know, 1450s AD, dawn of the typeset page, 'first substantial printed book in the West'?  Totally amazing!  Ink as dark and shiny as though it was printed this morning!

See the Gutenberg Bible at the NYPL until the end of August 2009 (no library card necessary).

New York, January 25, 2008 . . . The National Cowboy Poetry Gathering, Jan 26-Feb 2, in Elko, Nevada isn't really a fiddle event.  That's what they say.

Truth is, got some serious western swing fiddling going on courtesy of the Quebe Sisters Band, with Joey McKenzie on guitar

While Lost Weekend, Don Burnham's western swing band featuring Paul Anastasio on fiddle, plays the Star Basque Hotel & Restaurant in beautiful downtown Elko.

And, the Yodeling Cowboy, Ernie Sites (fiddling Joe Sites's brother), brings his mix of cowboy and other western tunes, accompanied by Canadian fiddler, Myron Szott, to JR's Gold Country.

Can't make it to Elko?  Well, how's Lewistown, MT, Cloverdale, CA or Abbotsford, BC sound?

New York, July 15, 2007 . . . Reports flooding in daily to HQ (that would be www.weiserfilms.com):  Weiser 2007 off the Richter scales of Idaho fiddle awesomilitudinousness.  Perfect weather, tons of people and great players everywhere.

Biggest surprise is new 2007 Grand National Champion Alex Hargeaves, who unseated former champ Tristan Clarridge in an amicable duel for the top honor.  More to come later . . .

Welcome To 2007!

Smack Dab In The Fiddle Middle . . .

New York, September 27, 2006 . . . The Grand Master Fiddler Championship (‘GMFC’) takes place smack dab in the middle of the International Bluegrass Music Association (‘IBMA’) ‘World Of Bluegrass’ coming up this weekend in Nashville, TN.

The IBMA event includes a Bluegrass Business Conference, Bluegrass Music Awards Show and a Bluegrass Fan Fest.  It’s apparently one of the premier bluegrass events of the year.

The GMFC is very smart to launch its event in the midst of it – even though the fiddle contest does not feature bluegrass fiddling!  Yes, you read it right.  The Grand Master Fiddler Championship does not feature bluegrass fiddling.

Well, then, you may ask ‘What kind of fiddling does the GMFC feature?’

Welcome to the wonderful world of ’Texas-style’ fiddling and its redheaded stepchild, ‘contest-style’ fiddling.  What are they and what’s the difference between them and bluegrass fiddling?

That, my friends, someone ought to make a movie about (be sure to bookmark this site, while you’re at it).

Suffice it to say that GMFC organizers Howard Harris and Ed Carnes have aligned their contest with the annual IBMA show in an effort to grow the audience for the contest-style fiddling they and a lot of other people love.

It’s a master stroke – one that we hope lands a bunch o’bluegrass fiddlers . . .
